The Fictionkin Book Symbol

Now tidied up and in scalable vector form!

The fictionkin book symbol, an open book with two-tone pages and an inverse two-tone circle split across the two pages.

About the symbol

This is the "fictionkin book" symbol for the fictionkin/fictionkind community. The sketch for the symbol was originally published on July 6, 2025 on Tumblr via my blog @through-lines. This was immediately followed by an icon of the symbol made by Woodland (@nyctohyloph0bia) on the same day, which is the version which has gained the most recognition so far.

This symbol is intended to represent the fictionkin/fictionkind community regardless of individual origins and beliefs, with an emphasis on being of a fictional world (however literally you take the word "fictional").

Symbolism

The symbol is a two-tone open book. One side represents "fiction" and the worlds depicted therein; the other represents "non-fiction" and the "real world". Between the two halves of the book is an inversely two-tone circle. The circle represents the self, which exists in both the "fictional" world and "non-fictional" world.

Motivation for creating the symbol

The original idea for the fictionkin book was prompted by discussion on Tumblr in the early 2020s about the "F Key" fictionkin symbol, which was created on fictionkin.com and was considered the only symbol for the fictionkin community since. I personally appreciated the symbolism present in the F Key symbol, but I agreed with the common opinion that the design itself left something to be desired.

I wrote more about my motivation and design choices in this blog post from July 7, 2025.
